At the end of every year people like to look back and reflect on the last 12 months. The Top 10 Inventions in 2017.We consider where we were, how far we’ve come and where we are now. It’s also a good time to look at one’s accomplishments – and failures – and start to consider some goals for the future. And no year-end would be complete without several “best of” lists. So with that in mind let’s look at some of the top inventions of 2016. Of course, there were too many to list them all here and this is not a scientific measurement, by any stretch of the imagination. It’s just 10 of the most innovative inventions of the last 12 months, in no particular order.

1. Self-Lacing Shoes $720

Those amazing shoes worn by Marty McFly in “Back to the Future” are finally a reality, as Nike has released the Hyperadap 1.0. These shoes automatically tighten or loosen up with the touch of a button, which is great for athletes, but also for the disabled community.

2. “Secret” Solar Panels – Available Next Year

There’s no question using solar panels has several benefits. However, they have never been considered attractive. That’s why Tesla and Solarcity have created the Solar Roof, which is a series of tiles designed to blend together and power your home, all while looking good at the same time.

3. Smart Alarm Clock - $149+

Alarm clocks have come a long way, but the Hello Sense alarm clock takes the cake. This simple and sleek little clock not only wakes you up, but it will also help improve your sleep quality by gauging light, temperature, air quality and humidity in your sleep area in an effort to create the perfect sleep environment. It even monitors your sleep cycles and wakes you at the best possible time.

4. Fold-up Drone $999

The drone craze is still going strong and the Dji Mavic Pro makes high-end drone ownership possible for a much larger market. This drone, which is sleek, lightweight and foldable but it still has some of the best specs available, including a 4K camera, obstacle-avoidance capability, and subject-tracking technology.

5. “Artificial Pancreas” Available Next Year

Managing diabetes is about to get easier for those who are insulin dependent, thanks to the Minimed 670g, which attaches to your body and automatically reads your blood-sugar level every five minutes, and then either withholds or provides insulin as needed.

6. Prosthetic Arm for Fun – Available Soon

Prosthetic limbs are no doubt a huge help to those who use them, but they have never been known for being too fun. The IKO might change that. This arm has been designed to help children who have lost an arm be able play. It comes with a hand but the hand can also be switched out for other toy-like attachments, all of which are designed to work with Legos. What kid wouldn’t love that?

7.Wireless Headphones $159

Wireless headphones have been around for years, but Apple’s new Airpods offer some unique features that make them stand out. You can listen to music, but they also come with microphones so you can control your phone with your voice and they can even detect when they are in your ears. Plus, they automatically pair with your iPhone.

8. Talking Speaker $180

Amazon has created a whole new type of personal assistant with the Amazon Echo. This smart speaker answers your questions and can also help you with several chores around the house, like turning off lights, calling a cab or ordering some pizza.

9. Smart Thermometer $40

Who enjoys having a thermometer stuck in their mouth to get a temperature reading? No one does, really, especially a child who doesn’t feel well. While new methods have been created, the Arc InstaTemp makes taking a temperature a piece of cake with its infrared technology. Now you don’t even have to touch your forehead to get a reading. Just place it an inch away from the subject and you get an instant, accurate reading.

10. PlayStation VR $400

Virtual reality is still a huge market, which most likely has a lot of growth and development still to come. However, so far VR headsets have been rather expensive. Enter the PlayStation VR, which at only $400 works with the Sony PlayStation 4 and offers millions a great VR experience.
